Preparing for your Class 4 Restricted road test? This Class 4 Restricted pre-trip inspection checklist explains what to check under the hood, inside the cab, and around the vehicle. Follow the same order each time and clearly explain to the examiner what you are checking.

Step 1: Parking Brake and Engine Off
• Ensure the parking brake is on.
• Make sure the engine is off.
Step 2: Under the Hood Inspection
• Coolant: Check the level and confirm that the cap is tight and secure. Do not open a hot radiator cap.

• Washer fluid: Check the level and make sure the cap is tight and secure.
• Engine oil: Check the level, colour and smell.
• Belt: Check the tension and look for cuts or damage.
• Hoses, wires and clamps: Check for cuts, damage, loose connections or leaks.
• Battery: Make sure it is secure, the wires are properly connected and there is no corrosion.
• Brake fluid: Check the level and make sure the cap is tight and secure.
Step 3: Circle Check — Top to Bottom
Front and Driver’s Side
• Windshield: Check for cracks or damage.
• Wiper blades: Check their condition.
• Hood: Check for cracks or damage.
• Lights: Check for cracks or damage.
• Front bumper: Make sure it is secure.
• Front licence plate: Make sure it is secure.
• Under the vehicle: Check for leaks.
• Driver’s side window and body: Check for cracks or damage.
• Side mirror: Make sure it is secure and undamaged.
• Door: Make sure it opens and closes properly.
• Driver’s seat and seatbelt: Make sure they are secure and functioning.
• Gas cap: Make sure it is secure.
• Front and rear tires: Check the tread depth, tire pressure, sidewalls, rims and lug nuts.
